I think it’s gamer discourse bleeding out into other fields. Gamers need the newest libraries and the newest drivers or their stuff might not run as well as it possibly could, because gaming is a relatively young but aggressively growing field with the Linux ecosystem in general. Sure games have always been around, but it’s never been the focus.

Now that gamers are switching more frequently, and that the average user is likely to play a game occasionally, it’s becoming relatively important that packages be up to date for desktop workloads.

And if I carry a modern dumb phone designed for privacy and listen to my music on an mp3 nugget?

Plus it’s not just about privacy, thats just a big thing.

Consider this scenario: every time you want to listen to a song, you have a to grab your record from next to the cocaine, take it over to the record player next to the heroin, and do your best not to shoot up or rip a line while you get everything set up. That’s what using a smartphone is like for a lot of people. There’s nothing wrong with the device itself but the way they’re used as insidious addiction peddlers with the ticky-tocks and the instant-reels and the infinite-scrolling endless stream of mid content and ragebait.

Some people are actively trying to pull out of using their phones for everything. A phone is a phone, its for communicating. If you have a smartphone, sure use it as a PDA. It isn’t for anything else and won’t offer the best experience without concessions, nowadays those concessions often being privacy.

How is the audio quality on those? I’ve got the sp and was considering setting it up as an mp3 player for when I’m off grid but I don’t have the spoons to do if it’s gonna suck.

This is true at Starbucks too, the freshness of the brew is not why their coffee is bad. This is the company that sold charcoal as French roast for years before anyone noticed it was so overroasted it tasted like bad fish and ash. (I’ve never had a more difficult roast to find a pairing for - Smore’s is the answer, if anyone cares, to make starbucks french roast not taste awful)

CSS is for StyleSheets (so yes layout and font but also more). Adding these features allows for more reactive/responsive styles where the style may be behaviorally defined instead of hardcoding styles.

Basically the only thing I can think of to do with it is some kind of reactive layout that crunches some data and responds to it. IDK, I’m not a web dev and try to avoid CSS when I can.

If Cory Doctorow’s talk on Post US tech is accurate I suspect users may be able to take quite a bit of control back from corpos soon enough.

How are we meant to have these conversations if people keep complaining about the personification of LLMs without offering alternative phrasing? Showing up and complaining without offering a solution is just that, complaining. Do something about it. Its overused by people who misunderstand the point.

No, there isn’t ethical consumption under capitalism but that doesn’t mean we can stop and consider the actual impact of what we choose to financially support. We can make the choice to reduce negative impact, even if we can’t eliminate it.

What is your problem with it? Just seems like an accessability feature to me. The one issue I see with it is folks who don’t need it using it in lieu of walkthroughs and wasting energy. I don’t expect that to be that big an issue though, generally people buy games because they want to play them.

First it was for performance, OpenSuse back in like 2004, since then its just what I’m familiar with. I don’t feel like I need to fight the OS like I do on windows machines.

Sometimes I have to use windows in a VM or I need some Software that only works on 2000/XP (psxn00b sdk) and for that I have an old machine that I use.

Since they added free-form window management.

Node and react. Giant frameworks that seem to be the standard nowadays. They’re huge, bloated, and largely overkill for most things. I personally suspect they will be losing popularity soon due to the memory shortages.
