Every once in a while, I come across someone who makes me jealous.

YES! YES!! YES!!! I hate having to sift through that tripe when exploring certain genres.

getting real reading done without my ADHD taking over
Maybe that’s the appeal.

The Lynx browser is surprisingly nice.

How fucking dumb are some of these Americans to believe that shit.
I’ve lived here most of my life and knew it was bad but had no idea just how bad it was until Trump 1.0. Then covid-19 happened and it was a real eye opener for many of us. Now it’s not just willful ignorance but a deep-seated dedication to remaining ignorant at all costs.

Just a touch too close to reality. That was a beyond-awesome comment.
most of those people would forget you exist if you leave Facebook
This is 100% true. I dropped facebook about 10 years back. If I’m not your “friend” without facebook, then you’re not really my friend. Getting out of that cesspool of drama and ignorance was one of the best moves I’ve made.

Oh dear, don’t ever forget your netmask.

Exactly. I’ll go back to browsing the web with Lynx before I accept ads. If it breaks, it breaks…

You may be right, technically, but based on the context, I’m quite sure the use of the word “dark” here is intended to frame the behavior as negative. It’s just like when various media authors refer to TOR as the “dark web” even though it has countless valid uses that are not enabling illegal/immoral behaviors.

The site is still there, but the comment sections are no longer fun nor do you find intelligent feedback as frequently as you could in the early days. Last time I was poking around there, the mods were upvoting climate denial comments. So much for science. (source: low uid)

Tesla? You mean the Ford Pinto of EVs?? https://www.rawstory.com/cybertruck-2671127676/

Too much risk of spiders back there!
Found the Australian.

30 years using Linux - most of that time as a Linux sysadmin. and this is unfortunately true. I got on the Apple ecosystem 20 years ago because I wanted to removed the sysadmin work from my non-work time and it does that quite well. I find most commercial technology to be a faustian bargain with my free time vs. my ethics.

Pay or fuck off, no ads.
Contrary to what you seem to have understood with my previous post, I’d be absolutely fine with this.

I will block any and every ad I possibly can using all technology available to me. Does that break someone’s business model? Too bad. Do I care if all this glorious ad-sponsored content goes away forever because of the actions of me and others like me? Not even a little bit. In fact, I will welcome the day that ad blocking gains enough momentum that it causes businesses to go under or restructure their entire operational model. If ads are the only way something can exist, then it deserves to die.
In case it wasn’t clear enough: I don’t care.
I’ve been working in the IT/Internet industry for over 30 years, in one form or another. I understand how things work and I probably have a better perspective than most on how dysfunctional we have become.

AdGuard (app & DNS) does a decent job on iOS.
I’d rather they worked on a decent web browser or an email client or something like that.
