Social network Reddit recently began blocking mobile visitors to its website while pushing them to download the official Reddit app, and it's fair to say that the move is not going down well with users. If you visit reddit.com on your iPhone today, you may see a new popup that can't be dismissed, asking you to "get the app to keep using Reddit".
I would love to be 100% Lemmy but there’s still a lot more users and discussions on Reddit. It’s getting better, but it’s not yet at critical mass for me
I don’t visit Reddit out of principle. I don’t care that there are more discussions and more fun content and game dev updates and stuff there that I’m missing. I mourn the loss, but I will never go back and visit Reddit. Mustn’t give them traffic.
I don’t blame you. I’m not quite at that point yet, but I’m not far off.
If they kill or nerf Old Reddit I’ll probably be done.
Understandable. It’s a big step to take.
It’s liberating though. Like a recovering alcoholic able to say they are sober without relapsing. 😄
I don’t have a problem! I can stop whenever I want! :P
Thing is- I don’t use reddit for ‘scrolling’, mainly for participation in various discussions. That makes it a lot harder to replace…
Same as you 🖐️, also participated in a lot of discussions. I loved it, it was so much fun. I miss that aspect, because a lot of my interests aren’t represented well here in the fediverse. Alas…
FWIW, it’s gone downhill. Steady decline over the last decade or so as the site (like every other social media) goes for quantity and ad revenue over quality. So really good discussions are not nearly as common as they once were.
That said- I get a lot more bad discussions here in the Fediverse than on Reddit. By that I mean people who spout talking points but the instant you challenge them with facts, they go for personal insults.
Really? That’s the opposite of my experience. But maybe we have had discussions on different communities about different topics. 😅 I can imagine certain political topics being trained by that, or?
I get plenty of good convos here- perhaps even more on a density measurement (% of good vs total) than on Reddit. But the density of bad ones is higher too. Mainly anything involving politics people are much less open minded here than on Reddit. At least on Reddit usually the person will talk to you or say they respectfully disagree, here on the Fediverse I’ve several times had ‘heres the talking points’, I directly refute them, then something like ‘you obviously don’t understand and I can’t be bothered to explain it to you’. And while I certainly accept that I might not understand, this happens in places where their argument is ‘A caused B’, and my response is ‘you can look it up, B happened before A’.
