A federal judge on Friday ruled that immigration officers in Southern California can’t rely solely on someone’s race or speaking Spanish to stop and detain them.

District Judge Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong issued a temporary restraining order after a lawsuit was filed by three men who were arrested as they waited to be picked up at a Pasadena bus stop for jobs on June 18, and after two others were stopped and questioned despite saying they are U.S. citizens.

Frimpong’s order bars the detention of people unless the officer or agent “has reasonable suspicion that the person to be stopped is within the United States in violation of U.S. immigration law.”

    Dutch, Japanese, Mexican etc, those are nationalities and are all meaningless scientifically and biologically.

    I hear this point raised somewhat frequently, and I understand the sentiment, but it’s just incorrect. There are physical and genetic differences between different groups of people from different parts of the world. We are all human and all deserve respect, but I think papering over our differences and declaring we’re all the same introduces an unnecessary level of doublethink to the discussion.

      Humans are genetically similar: The vast majority of human DNA is shared. On average, humans are 99.9% identical at the DNA level. More genetic variation exists within a "racial group" than between different groups.
Race has no biological basis: Race is a social construct, not a biological one. Genetic differences do not support the idea of race. Variations between populations, such as skin color or hair texture, are often adaptations to local environments. These variations do not correlate with overall genetic differentiation.

      So as you can imagine, my kids who are born from a father of one nationality and a mother from another nationality across the globe have no “race” or “ethnicity” both of which are social constructs and are not genetic or scientifically relevant terms… And we’re brown. As soon as anyone mentions those terms in a conversation my brain tells me to walk away. When my kids were born, an island nation didn’t suddenly pop up mid Atlantic… Or more accurately, a freaking land ring did not appear. They cannot be deported to anything where they came from except for the USA. They don’t have specific eye features that tell anyone they come from New York. No Jaw bone spurs that only appear in native SanDiegans (L-O-fucking-L).

      Literally, the city I was born in is twice as old as the US and people from my country funded her country… Only hundreds of years ago. The time between the roman empire and now is not significantly long to create a human sub species. So from a scientific logical person to the rest of y’all, forget these terms and anything else as such. Say “a person born in Arizona was murdered by a gov agency today”. That’s much more accurate.
