I may be ignorant, but from my experience Boston Dynamics is cool and if they were able to sell these things to the AI guys good for them!
I know these robots are used to do maintenance vhecks on big factories, where a dude can tell it to walk to a valve to look at it through a camera, and i think thats fine.
Instead of having 50 cameras you have one walking one.

My ringtone is now default. But for a long time it used to be the aqua teen hunger force “dancing is forbidden” song, without the starting noise of the baseball bat destroying the radio.
My alarm is also some default now, but it used to be a 5 second long loop of the EVE online shield alarm closely followed by the hull alarm .

I dont really remember much about the first game besides the mission in the post, but i do remember driver 2 being really difficult game.
That one mission where you have to hijack the truck or something like that, and the car that is pursuing you will just kill you 5seconds into the mission if you slowed down for a turn lol
After 50 resets of the mission i just desided that i will not even try to follow the truck if it takes 2/3 possible paths, just reset and hope for easy route and then T-bone the truck hoping to complete the mission in the first 10seconds.
Or the mission that asks you to take out like 3 cars across the map, with a really strict timelimit, and sometimes the car you hit takes 50% damage per hit, sometimes 5%.
I was definitely going insane at some point in the playthrough.
Also ReDriver 2 PC port of driver 2 exists and is fully playable.
Ah yes, I have had that happen before. See that gap between two cars and squeeze through to avoid collision, but somehow manage to hit both of the cars and your car is in someones backyard pool. While the cars you “squeezed through” blast their horn for some reason… (in gta)

Yes it would be stupid to fire staff for a robot dog. Like you said there would be even more staff needed to maintain those dogs.
But it is case sensitive. Like you said, someone gets a call to go check out a questionable valve. Maybe that call was made by the robot who patrols a long corridor with 70 valves day and night, snapping pictures of the valves and sending them to the control center or something like that. And then again, who goes through those pictures to determine a questionable valve? AI? And if the valve needs constant surveiling, a robot dog and AI is not the tool for the job, its a wrong valve at that point.
But if a plant has a gabillion dollar and non critical infrastructure, why not let john maintenanceman drive a robot dog?
But yes they are expensive toys at the end of the day. I would hire a human every time if the labour was suitable for a human.
