  • I’d be cautious about seeing that as good news. I’ll always be suspicious of how many posts here are either partially or entirely automated, whether that means automatically reposting stuff from other sites, fully generated text, or just augmenting a human’s posting.

I like to think we’re too small for most botters to care about us, but who knows! As far as I’m aware, no one service has any reliable tools for spotting generated posts. No way are federated services prepared to deal with the insane influx of bots that would naturally come with being significantly more popular. Seems like all we have are captchas…

  • Oh, I didn’t realize how unclear that was. The disk is a 2TB NVME SSD. I searched and searched, even booted into Mint on another disk and tried to search from there, and could only find a few hundred GB worth of files (probably about 600GB if I had to guess, lol). I genuinely have no idea what could have been taking up nearly 1.4TB of space, so that’s all I meant when I said “only.”

My suspicion is that something was going wrong whenever I deleted anything. Maybe for some reason the data just weren’t going anywhere, even though the trash was empty and they were no longer showing up in their old locations. Hence the term “clogged.” No similar issues with Cachy just yet, though.

  • I just switched from Bazzite to Cachy today. For some reason my disk space got… clogged, with Bazzite? Filelight was no help so I backed everything up, wiped the disk, installed Cachy, replaced my files, and the disk went from being nearly full to only using 600GB. Still not sure what happened there.

Cachy, meanwhile, has asked me to update 4 times in the 4 hours I’ve been using it. Which is fine, I get that Arch is rolling release, but now on the 4th update it keep failing for some reason. Also I can’t have my headphones and speakers plugged in at the same time or my speakers don’t work.

Sigh. All this KDE stuff is nice and flashy, and my games have worked with both Bazzite and Cachy, so I appreciate that, but damn is it tough for me to make a Linux recommendation to anyone else that isn’t just “use Mint, it’s stable.” Anything more in depth turns into a mini essay (see above!)

  • Yeah people bring this up with Jon Stewart a lot too, but we shouldn’t be trusting TV personalities. I know that elections have devolved into popularity contests so these guys have a huge head start, but it takes a very specific type of personality to get into showbiz stardom like that and I don’t see them turning around to be actual good statesmen. I know Zelenskyy gets a lot of props for being a comedian turned incredible wartime leader, but those are… extenuating circumstances. Would have been very interested to see what he would have done as a peacetime leader.

  • i didn’t say earth was special. do you know what it takes for those elements to come together in a way that even begins to approach life? do we ever get brand new single celled organisms that have no relation to anything that currently exists? why does every organism we’ve studied seem to descend from a single ancestor if it’s so easy for life to arise from a barren soup?

we don’t even know if we arose from that soup. maybe we’re actually the aliens, delivered as a single frozen cell from some asteroid that crashed into earth. maybe! who knows! if people wanna write fanfic about the universe that’s their business, but it’s wildly frustrating how so many people pretend that fic has any scientific basis

  • She is not a victim. I wouldn’t care about her at all outside of “tax her so she’s not a billionaire,” except this publicity does nothing for anyone but her. Chances are she’s paying big bucks to do these interviews. I mean it’s the same move her ex has pulled the last 20 years!

Maybe she was ignorant and had no access to proof. Or maybe she’s into the same shit and wants a squeaky clean reputation to help avoid consequences. Either way, these types of articles shouldn’t be trusted, and they certainly shouldn’t be on the front page.

  • Literally, get a bar of gold, melt it down, press it into gold foil tissues, carve another gold bar into a tissue box, and wipe her tears. She could spend $100,000 on doing that every day for the next 800 years before running out of money.

Like if she had something genuine to add, that’d be something. You know, corroborate a victim’s story, make a call to action, “he should be in prison,” even “here’s something I’m doing to help” would still be reputation laundering but it would be something. She literally just went on to say (probably lie) that she didn’t know about it and it makes her so sad. Fucking billionaires, fuck.

  • Forget Melinda Gates. I was subjected to 2 minutes of her garbage NPR interview yesterday before I was able to skip it; it’s fucking crazy that this woman is being allowed to do a goddamn press tour about this, like she’s the main character. Oh, are you sad that Bill was a total piece of shit and you did nothing? Go be sad on your own time, on the miniscule chance you’re somehow not a total psycho you can go find a therapist, I’m sure you can afford one. Stop hogging media time to wash your own bullshit image. I wonder how much she donated to get them to have her on.

  • Also something to remember, if you really need Windows back it can be reinstalled almost as easily as any Linux distro. You flash an .iso to a USB, download massgrave, and you’re set.

For sure the ideal is not needing Windows at all, but as one of those people who do need it and find myself reinstalling it fairly often (niche VR hardware), it’s easier to make the leap to wipe a Windows install when you know you can get it back without too much fuss.

  • I’m not familiar with ProtonVPN configuration so can’t guide you much there, presumably if the port forwarding option only allows for one setting then maybe it’s doing both TCP/UDP? I dunno…

Maybe that’s a good place for me to do some digging, but this is an issue specific to the new torrent I made. Things I download first seed just fine, and at much higher rates when I have the port open, so I think that’s working normally regardless of any TCP/UDP stuff under the hood.

can the test torrent client see that there is a seed on the torrent?

I think I misread this. No, neither client sees any peers, but when viewing the trackers within the client, the trackers are reporting peers. I’ll keep what I originally typed in the spoiler below.

    Tap for spoiler

Yes. Incidentally, when I opened the port on the leech client, a few other leechers joined the swarm as well, but I was only ever able to upload anything to my own test client. Even once the upload finished, neither client uploaded anything to those other leechers either. A few hours later, the count (looking from both seed and leech client) went back down to 1 seeder and 1 leecher.

Um. Just out of curiosity, I checked the peer list again, and while I’m still the only leecher, some of the trackers are now showing multiple seeders? I definitely only ever uploaded anything to myself, how is that possible?

  • Always good to double check, but yes, I used canyouseeme and the port is definitely open.

The port is configured through ProtonVPN. A few menu options below the one for port forwarding there’s another for configuring the connection as OpenVPN(TCP), OpenVPN(UDP), or Wireguard. I’ve had other issues in the past and Transmission’s internal port testing thing always specifies it’s testing TCP, so that’s what I had it set to with Proton. I switched Proton to UDP and am waiting a few minutes before testing it with Wireguard.

lol well with Proton’s Wireguard config it doesn’t seem like I can open a port at all, so I’ve set that back to TCP for now.

Could I be missing a step with the trackers? Do I need to upload something to them first? I looked around on opentrackr.org and didn’t see anything, plus in the client the trackers are reporting 1 seeder (me) and leechers, plus it worked when I opened the port on my test leech… I’m so lost :(
